METROHM
Typography, Type Design
OVERVIEW
Beginning with an exploration of type throughout my neighborhood— from hand-painted addresses to dated signage, I studied forms, materials, and cultural nuances that gave these letterforms their distinct local character. Drawing inspiration from the Clairemont visual landscape, I developed a custom typeface that reflects the spirit and identity of the community while incorporating my own design sensibilities.
The final typeface is both a personal interpretation and a typographic tribute to the everyday letterforms that often go unnoticed, yet shape the visual fabric of our surroundings.

TYPE SOLUTION
Metrohm is a custom sans-serif typeface inspired by the everyday typography of urban environments. Clean, structured, and subtly idiosyncratic, Metrohm balances geometric precision with humanistic quirks. Its low contrast and generous spacing make it highly legible, while slight irregularities in curves and terminals nod to the hand-made signage and vernacular letterforms observed throughout the neighborhood.

DEVELOPMENT
Metrohm began with calligraphy, where I studied the structure and flow of traditional letterforms. From there, I moved into iterative sketching, digital drafting in Illustrator, and testing letters in context. I focused on maintaining rhythm and consistency while allowing subtle quirks to emerge, giving the typeface a grounded, lived-in feel without losing clarity.
